Assistant Transport Manager

R S Cockerill are a family business based at Dunnington, near York supplying fresh potatoes into the supermarkets, as well as supplying the major crisp manufacturers with processing potatoes. We operate throughout the potato supply chain from delivering seed potatoes to farms, right through to distributing the finished product to our customers. All of this activity is supported by our own transport division, operating 15 articulated units to support 90 trailers ranging from flat trailers to root crop bulkers, to curtainsiders and insulated vans. As well as our own fleet, we have a dedicated network of subcontractors working with us.

The role will suit someone wishing to either embark on a career in Transport Management or an ambitious driver wanting to progress to the next level.


Job role:

We are looking for an individual to support the Transport Manager in:

  • Day to day traffic planning and operations, collating orders and optimising trailer fill.
  • Liaising with colleagues, customers, and communicating with drivers and subcontractors.
  • Assist the Transport Manager in making sure that we operate within the law and that we are compliant with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Overseeing the management and logistics of returnable customer trays and merchandising units.


    Job requirements:

  • Excellent organisational skills and a keen eye for attention to detail.
  • Good time management skills. Able to work within deadlines and to ‘booking in’ times.
  • A full UK Driving License.
  • Preferably HGV C+E licence (Class 1) with Driver CPC qualifications and Digital Tachograph Card, with CPC (National or International) an added advantage.
  • A full understanding of the driver’s hour’s legislation.
  • Must be computer literate, and able to use online vehicle tracking and maintenance portals.
  • Have a good level of communication skills, work as part of a team, with the ability to understand and share verbal instruction in English.
  • Weekday work hours from 08:00 to 17:00 (with an hour for lunch), but you will be expected to be included in a weekend cover rota, with days off in lieu.
  • Show full co-operation and awareness of company Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Have a proactive and flexible approach, with an enthusiastic ‘can do’ attitude.
