On Wednesday we welcomed over 150 growers and PepsiCo suppliers to our wash site at Barmby Moor for PepsiCo’s first in-field grower workshop. The event brought together growers, agronomists, suppliers and industry specialists for a day of workshops, demonstrations and open discussions on the future of British potato production. Two of our newest 1400t bulk stores were utilised, making one store an auditorium with a large video wall and seating for 200 people and the other being used for workshops and other events.
Through a series of engaging workshops, we explored a range of topics impacting the industry.
* Varieties: with particular emphasis on the performance of SHC2030 and future potential as a sustainable crisping variety.
* Soil structure & soil management: shining a spotlight on the Potato-Lite programme.
* Cover crops and biodiversity: and the role they play in improving soil health and supporting the pep+ regen ag programme.
* Yara: lower carbon fertilisers and how their N-tester can help farmers optimise nitrogen application.
* CCm: sharing their developments in their fertiliser technology and practical application techniques.
* Damage reduction: exploring ways to reduce damage particularly during loading with the use of a fall breaker.
Additionally, we were lucky to be joined by a 6×4 demonstrator from Windrose Technology Inc, highlighting the future potential of electric trucks. The day wasn’t all potato related however, an F1 simulator provided great entertainment, and we were particularly delighted that Cockerill’s Grower Archie Hobson managed ultimately to claim joint victory with the fastest lap. The day was finished off at the Milner Hotel in York where growers and suppliers were able to get together and celebrate some of the successes of the year.
